Why is the rotherhithe tunnel closed in rush hour on a week day for 'tree pruning'? There was no notice given, and this has caused chaos in south east london. Updates

  • This is an emergency closure today and tomorrow for tree cutting. This is a health and safety issue due to the conditions of the trees. The works cannot be done overnight due to the location of trees. The Tunnel is closed from 9.00 am till 16.00pm each day during the pruning of 22 trees above the northern end of the tunnel which Tower Hamlets have identified as a safety risk following a tree health analysis report. We have implemented the traffic signal plans to assist traffic flow in the surrounding area. VMS is in place, Tweets sent to road users, and the TfL website updated.
