Unclear information about speed limits

Member of public reported this to us on 16th June; a visitor to London: when I joined the Edgware Road around Maida Vale, I tried to watch out for speed limit signs. Please understand that - for someone living outside London - there are so many signs, blue barriers, traffic lights, road works etc etc that it is a very stressful to drive down this road with so much going on. I could not see any road signs saying the speed was 20 mph and there were certainly no signs on the road surface itself advising of speed limits - these are vital, I believe. On Park Lane southbound (4 lanes) I could see no road limits signs at all so went at around 30 mph though I thought the speed limit was probably 40 mph. But on the way home I discovered that Park Lane northbound was now one lane with extensive road signage indicating the speed restriction was 20 mph. This included speed limit information on the road surface itself which was very noticeable and helpful. And following this - and alerted by it - I saw on the northbound Edgware Road signs 20 mph signs on pillars, and looking sideways I saw that there were also north facing 20 mph signs which I had not observed on the way down. I have had a completely clear record for at least 30 years and was very distressed to think I may have broken the speed limit - perhaps I will receive a fine etc. All in all, on the way home I became tearful at the end of what should have been a day of happiness following reunion with my grandchildren and daughter. Do you have any response to this? Can you understand how hard it is to work out speed limits which are so varied in so many areas - with for example signage on the Edgware Road south that needs to be made larger, clearer or more distinct so that things are obvious even for a visitor.
