Terrible traffic caused by bad signal management
Reported in the General Fault category anonymously at 00:34, Saturday 12 September 2020
Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS2290619.
The traffic at this junction always builds up from all approaches, which could easily be solved if the lights were configured differently.
The traffic approaching from Station Road gets held up if a few cars are attempting to turn right, because traffic coming down from Leesons Hill takes priority and holds up the junction. This means traffic can build right back causing a blockage at the junction of Mill Brook Road and delaying bus services.
Traffic coming along Cray Avenue towards Sevenoaks Way builds up before the junction because cars are trying to get into the correct lanes to either get into the shopping area or turn right into Station Road, which can hold everything up.
Traffic flow would be so much better if the lights were timed differently. Allow traffic to come from each side of the junction one direction at a time.
Ie; all traffic from Station Road has a green signal whilst Leeson’s Hill waits on red. Then all traffic from Cray Avenue takes its turn on green, whether they’re turning left, right, or going straight on (not the current pattern of having a separate filter light for turning right). Then Leeson’s Hill goes green, then Sevenoaks Way.
Then stop all traffic to allow pedestrians to cross. The sequence may take longer over all, however more traffic will flow during the duration that each side has its turn.
With one side of traffic moving at a time, there should be no hold ups at this junction because cars are not trying to pass one another in opposite directions blocking the road and all traffic will flow easier, creating less jams.
