New cycle lanes - South West London

Reported in the Streetspace Feedback category anonymously at 15:20, Fri 25 September 2020

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS2311729.

New Road layout in SW London To creat the new cycle lanes in South West London (in particular between Colliers Wood and Balham), a complete Lane was taken off & iron bars were placed to divide the cycle lane from the cars leaving 1 narrow car lane on each side The bus stops are built in the middle so that when the bus stop all cars has to wait behind In a major junction like Tooting Bec High street the 3 lanes are now 1 lane for cars turning right, left & driving ahead In addition to sharp bending lanes in Balham & Colliers Wood High Street My question: how an ambulance, police or fire car will be able to pass through? The cars on both sides cannot give it any way through because the iron bars are restricting the movement This is life’s high risk practice bearing in mind these roads are around St George’s Hospital one of the busiest hospitals in London I am not telling you about; 1. the present car congestion resulted from this although still most people work from home 2. During dark raining nights how many drivers will crush into the bus stops if they are not familiar with the area 3. The roads look ugly now. Is this the Capital of Great Britain instead of making it more beautiful?

  • Friday evening at 6-7pm, I found complete congestion in Elmbourne Road (newly restricted driving) which took over 45 minutes to clear. I wish to turn left into Ritherdon Road from Balham High Road which can longer be done. The new restrictions in Elmbourne Road meant that cars had to reverse, park on the payment and be non plused by the number of cars unable to move. Why restrict a left turn into a very wide Ritherdon Road is madness. Please assess this latest restriction. Thank you.
