The way the traffic lights work at this junction makes it very dangerous to turn right into Elmgrove Road from Station Road. There is a filter lane for traffic to make this turn but no corresponding filter on the traffic lights. This means that a driver has to have the reflexes of a cat in order to turn right the instant the lights change to avoid being blocked by traffic coming from the direction of Wealdstone, or he will find himself trapped in the yellow box until the lights are again in his favour. Worse still, if a driver wanting to turn right waits until his light goes red again to complete his turn because he missed the miniscule window of opportunity earlier when his light turned green, he then discovers that the lights controlling the traffic coming from the direction of Wealdstone didn't turned red when his did, and in fact don't do so until several seconds afterwards. A driver unfamiliar with the junction would not be unreasonable in assuming that the lights operated in unison, particularly as he has no indication at all that they don't because he can't see them, and as a result there is a high probability that he will find himself T-boned by an oncoming car. If there hasn't been a serious accident at this junction already then one is inevitable unless a filter light is added to the traffic lights installation at this junction to enable safe right turns into Elmgrove Road from Station Road. Traffic coming from the direction of Wealdstone already has a right turn filter traffic light so why is traffic coming from the direction of Sheepcote Road not accorded the same consideration? I've encountered this junction twice in recent weeks, and it's only because of the bad fright I received the first time around that I noticed that the problem was still very much present the second time; I still had to move like lightning in order to complete the turn before the oncoming traffic blocked access, and this simply should not be necessary in order to turn right at a traffic light controlled junction. The yellow junction box is supposed to improve junction safety, but in this instance it exacerbates the problem because of the efforts drivers go to in order to avoid being fined because of being caught in one.
