Potential hazard for cyclists on Balham High Road

Reported via desktop in the Streetspace Feedback category anonymously at 09:29, Wed 28 October 2020

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS2360402.

On Balham High Street, there's Snappy Snaps at 198 Balham High Road, next The Cyclist Take Away, after J Rogers & Sons, Holland & Barrett, then As Nature Intended...

Here's my problem explained...first I'd like to say a BIG thank you for all the amazing cycle safety improvement lanes you've made along Balham High Street, as I'm a very keen cyclist who rides to my work place: Rutherford House School everyday from Bethnal Green (Tower Hamlets Council could learn a lot from your wonderful cycle safety lanes).

However, there's a major danger spot for all cyclists within the new layout you've created which I think is a quick fix...outside the shop 'The Cyclists Take Away' there is red route parking box. It is causing cyclist problems and potential danger. Company delivery motor scooters, I guess that belong to the take away prior mentioned, are parking (legally I suppose) in this zone along with cars owned by the shop owners. The moment you enter the cycle lane from the lights next to Balham tube station, within moments you are met by these business delivery scooters and/or cars and within minutes you have to re-enter the major flow of traffic! I don't really understand why a cycle lane was created from the lights to this obstacle. It would be better to remove this red route parking box then cyclist would be so much safer.

I encourage you to get on a bike around 4:30pm and head towards Central London from my school Rutherford House School, 217 Balham High Road, SW17 7BQ and observe how this new configuration recently created puts cyclists in a dangerous position, as they re-enter the traffic flow outside 'The Cyclists Take Away' to go round the last of the new poles you've installed (however, I do think they are brilliant, it's just this location has issues).

Is it possible this red route parking box could be removed and the cycle lane simply flow out of Balham High Street heading towards Central London, for believe me...this is a cycle accident, possibly a fatality for a cyclist waiting to happen. Again I ask you, take a bike along this very route around 4:30pm, meet those scooters and/or cars and you will see the problem for yourself.

I so hope that you can fix this cycling lane dilemma, I know you have spent a lot of money already and that I believe your road works to keep cyclists safe in and around Balham is amazing but this is an area of grave concern.

Thank you for considering this.
