Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m a Councillor in St Mary’s Park, Battersea. A number of months ago, on behalf of a resident in St Mary’s Park, I reported to TfL an issue with the lights at the Junction of Battersea Bridge Road, Westbridge Road and Parkgate Road.
Having submitted that issue, I then received a response from TfL, which said,
“Thank you for your feedback form about the traffic signals at the junction of Battersea Bridge Road, Westbridge Road and Parkgate Road.
I appreciate that time you have taken to raise your concerns.
The Northbound and Southbound green signal time for Battersea Bridge Road at this junction, was intended to be followed by a Southbound only green signal for traffic on Battersea Bridge Road, in order to keep the northbound exit of the junction clear. Due to several issues with the layout of the junction and configuration of the signals, this was not operating as intended.
In response to this issue, we have temporarily suspended the Southbound only green signal time and simplified the operation of the junction. The sequencing of the traffic signals has been amended so that Battersea Bridge Road receives a green signal (northbound and southbound at the same time) followed by Westbridge Road and Parkgate Road receiving a green signal (eastbound and westbound at the same time).
We are working towards a longer-term solution, involving amendments to the signal layout and configuration, to enable the Southbound only green signal time for traffic on Battersea Bridge Road. This will require physical changes to the junction and cannot be implemented immediately.
We appreciate your continued patience here, I trust you’ll see an improvement here.”
So it sounds like TfL made some changes and the situation improved for a period of time.
However, I just received an e-mail from the resident to say that there’s now another issue at these lights. In their own words they said,
“Well, it’s happening again as of a few days ago and continuing. I saw a bemused pedestrian almost run over by a bus this morning, having pressed the crossing button and then seen the lights change to red. I almost set off across the lights on my bike (from Parkgate Rd) too before I noticed they’d never switched to green and had changed to green again North/Southbound. I really think temporary fixing of this is not good enough and TfL should know that any serious accident here due to this will be on their head.”
So please can you look into this as a matter of urgency?
Best wishes,
Councillor Rhodri Morgan
