These traffic lights 'cancel' the pedestrian wait button and are dangerous
Reported via desktop in the General Fault category anonymously at 17:18, Tue 18 May 2021
Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS2734412.
There are several issues with these lights:
1. When crossing Kentish Town Road from either side, the pedestrian button regularly cancels itself. This can happen several times during one 'wait' - yesterday I saw someone on the opposite side of the road press the button three times, as after the first time, the light went off. If you're not checking the button is lit red, you end up waiting through two cycles of traffic.
2. There is no beep noise emitted from the traffic light so how do people with limited or no vision know when to cross the road?
3. When the traffic lights show green for cars and cyclists coming from Castle Road onto Kentish Town Road, the cyclists going straight across KT Road and into the southbound lane can't easily see the red light for traffic going south down KT Road so they frequently enter the cycle box then pedal right over the pedestrian crossing while the green man is showing or the countdown is on for pedestrians to cross the road. This happens virtually every time I attempt to cross the road and I've even been shouted at for taking my children across the road by cyclists who were unable to see the red traffic light when in fact it was my right of way to cross the road.
4. The lights controlling the northbound lane of KT Road are positioned so that cars frequently pull up inside the pedestrian crossing, partially or completely blocking the crossing and preventing people from crossing safely. There needs to be a junction in place or different signage so this doesn't happen. Cars also stop in such a way as they are blocking the cycle lane that connects Castle Road with the southbound lane of KT Road.
