Major Traffic Impact
Reported via desktop in the Roadworks category anonymously at 13:14, Tue 10 May 2022
Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS3515233.
Whilst I appreciate that the works to strengthen the bridge on the A41 over the M1 are very important is it possible to review some of the closures in order to deal with the complete gridlock. The surrounding areas are full of traffic. Why are works not taking place around the clock ? The impact on traffic, including buses, is horrendous. Journey times are doubling or trebling. In addition works are about to start on the A5 through Stanmore / Edgware / Burnt Oak which will compound the problems.
This is really pathetic to do during school time. The scale of issues is not just related to the surrounding areas but has spread to Hendon, Elstree, Stanmore, across all of Mill Hill, pretty much everywhere. Children are getting late to school, people are late to doctor appointments etc. If Tfl cannot plan for such things then better to not do it.
If it's urgent to complete then they could have waited until school holidays.

Absolutely RIDICULOUS, the imbeciles who have organized this shambolic folly need to be held accountable for the carnage and misery they are causing to the whole of the NW7 area and beyond. Yet again the local residents are made to suffer. I challenge one of our newly elected councillors to step in and sort this catastrophe out!!!

I had to drive past the roadworks this morning - traffic at a standstill over a wide area and ONLY ONE person in a little digger was working.. why is the area not flooded with workforce to get this done.

The first phase of the roadworks was bad but traffic moved because the single lane of the A41 Eastbound opened into all 4 lanes at the Apex corner lights with enough space to get cars flowing. Since the road was closed over the weekend and the lanes have been reconfigured, traffic is at a standstill as there is not enough space for all 4 lanes to be used. That simple change, which may allow 10 more cars to go through per green light, has caused chaos. Combine that with other roadworks in surrounding areas, such as Brockley Hill, and it’s gridlock everywhere. Please open up more space at the lights at Apex Corner.

The issue is affecting NHS care, as ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles are stuck in the traffic and are unable to deliver urgent and life saving care due to the inept planning.
6 lanes are closed in for 100m of roadworks in all directions and most of them are totally unnecessary

The change in layout is causing more congestion than necessary and is damaging my health because of the extra pollution caused by slow traffic. Please review the cone layout at the end of the roadworks on the A41 eastbound. The cones now block two lanes of entry to the roundabout - before the changeover none of entries to the roundabout was blocked. This is to allow works to exit however there being traffic lights at the roundabout the works machines could easily merge before the lights. Fixing this would make my health and my life much better and it's not a huge ask. Many thanks.

I'm a paramedic. It usually takes me 30 minutes to get to work. Yesterday I allowed an hour because of the roadworks, but was still 45 minutes late. So it took me 105 minutes to do a journey that usually takes 30!

Thank you for taking the time to report this to us. It is much appreciated. The temporary road layout will change as the works progress. Information on these changes can be found on the TfL website. The optimum method of working would be to close the road entirely to all vehicles and pedestrians in order to complete the works quickly to assure the quality of the repairs and provide a safe work area. However this would involve diverting pedestrians and vehicles over long distances for several weeks. Therefore, in order to ensure the needs of all road users are balanced, we will be closing the road in phases to complete the works.
Closures on the approach to the roundabout are required to ensure that traffic into the roundabout doesn’t exceed the safe capacity of the exit routes. Removing the closure’s has been explored but it is not considered safe or to provide any benefit as it will reallocate the congestion elsewhere. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused while the works are continuing.
