Traffic Light

Reported via desktop in the Stuck on red category anonymously at 14:47, Thursday 26 May 2022

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS3553906.

I have noted a significant safety risk at the Cannon Street traffic light crossing (the crossing that intersects with Walbrook).

On the eastbound direction, due to the large distance from the traffic light to the pedestrian crossing (some fifty feet), cars will often quickly drive through an Amber light - at which point the green man for pedestrians to walk has become active. The situation is exacerbated where there is minor congestion - as that can introduce a time lag.

I’ve seen this result in at least 5 near misses (involving cyclists or cars) and several more angry exchanges between pedestrians and car drivers. I sense a bad accident is very close to occurring, as drivers will believe they have cleared the traffic light and have the right to continue past the pedestrian crossing - whereas pedestrians will feel they have the right to cross as there is a green man now showing - with neither party backing down.

This needs looking at fairly imminently I’m afraid. Happy to discuss on the phone. I work on Cannon Street, so cross there routinely.
