Traffic light noise level

Reported via desktop in the General Fault category anonymously at 13:40, Wednesday 1 June 2022

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS3566573.

The beeping noise of the traffic lights in front of Caladonian road tube station is very loud. This issue has been reported previously and was marked as "fixed" and indeed I can report that the noise level was slightly reduced.

I have tried to see if I can tolerate this new level for a month now, but unfortunately I have to say that it is still too loud. I can clearly hear the beeping from my bedroom and office during the day, which causes a great deal of stress for me. Keep in mind that this is not an irregular occurance, but happens 50 times in an hour or so. Additionally, the type of beep is not pleasant or easy to ignore, but specifically designed to trigger an alarm response.

I understand the need of this beep for people with visual impairment, but there is no need for this sound to be as alarming and disturbing as it is - any type of audible and easily identifiable sound would work for this purpose. With the current shrill and alarming sound and noise level, even people like me who live nearby and desperately try to ignore it, will be forced to hear it. Indeed, I am sure that if the collective effect of this kind of noise pollution on the inhabitants of London was scientifically investigated, one could find a detrimental effect on mental health and stress level, and by extension follow-up conditions, such as premature heart diseases.

With all this, I would ask you again, kindly, to look into this traffic light noise, reduce the level to the lowest possible value and replace the sound itself with a less shrill and alarming version. Many thanks.
