Where are the workers?!
Reported via mobile in the Roadworks category anonymously at 15:20, Sat 22 October 2022
Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS3906716.
These roadworks - on an extremely important and already restricted stretch of road - are an absolute disgrace. As so many others have already said; works like these on such an arterial route should be as close to 24/7 as possible. 20 weeks was the original plan. You’ve quietly added another two weeks to this schedule. Why? Once again, today - not a single person on site. A tiny sign saying ‘material curing’. Really? Do me a favour. What is the point of coning off so much motorway ahead of these ‘works’ just to protect an area about the size of a tennis court? It’s complete and utter H&E overkill. I anticipate you’ll give me some ‘pick-a-paragraph’ response to this - like all the others that have been furious enough to voice a complaint on here. I notice the only people in your ‘roadworks charter’ that you seek not to inconvenience are cyclists (naturally 🙄) and pedestrians. The rest of us who use vehicles are clearly not a concern you trouble yourself with. The utter contempt with which TfL treats motorists is shameful. You regard us as the root of all evil whilst actually forcing us to remain stationary throughout the many absurd closures and diversions you initiate around the capital. Suffice to say - and for the benefit of anyone outside TfL reading this - the response I anticipate to this complaint will undoubtedly be a whitewash and a deflection. I won’t get an answer that adequately answers any logical question any of us might have about the M4 lane closures. It’ll say ‘fixed’ when I receive my inadequate reply. I guarantee… it won’t be. Advice to TfL - don’t get better at apologising/deflecting - get better at managing the roads. We pay you enough money. You owe us.

Thank you for taking the time to report this to us. It is much appreciated. TfL appreciate that these works are causing serious traffic disruption and we apologise for any inconvenience caused, but we assure you these works will avoid the need for more disruptive repairs at a later date.
The works are only on the bridge; the coned off lane (traffic management) over the elevated section of the M4 is to channel traffic down to one lane to enable traffic to pass the works safely. There are no works in this section of the traffic management.
As for the works on the bridge; There will be times when no one is working on site as working continuously 24/7 is not possible because of the nature of the work. There are some activities that require ‘curing time’. For example (i) Waterproofing the structure, (ii) Placing concrete and (iii) Resurfacing the carriageway. These activities requires hours of curing time which prevents or restricts other site activities.
Therefore, there will be many times when driving past the site, there will be no-one working as materials are being cured, which we accept is enormously frustrating after being caught up in traffic delays.
Where and when we can, we are maximising our operations to speed up the overall programme including working at night and at weekends whilst balancing safety, quality of work and the impact to motorists.
