Lanes closed off for no reason causing massive tailbacks

Reported via mobile in the Roadworks category anonymously at 21:56, Fri 30 December 2022

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS4070544.

Two lanes coned off eastbound on the A4 as you come off the M4, for no reason whatsoever. There are no roadworks taking place and there are massive tailbacks as a result. This has been there for over a week and has been previously reported but clearly no action has been taken to remove the cones

  • Thank you for taking the time to report this to us. It is much appreciated. Unfortunately the bridge repairs were (and still are) safety critical. The duration is down to the scope of the works involved whilst also keeping this section of the A4 open for as much of it as possible. The cold snap is responsible for preventing TfL from completing the final weekend of its own works but as it stands at the moment, this final weekend has been pushed back until the current National Highways works are completed in order to avoid delaying their works programme.

The works that have started there now are to repair the concrete piers that are currently covered by nets to catch the falling concrete. This is being undertaken by National Highways. There will be lane 3 closures in place in both directions at this location from this week until early May to facilitate these works.

The cold weather is also responsible for the increase in burst water mains and other water related issues across the network, including this particular main on the A4. This has now been repaired and TM has been removed.
