Timings on pedestrian crossings to quick to cross the road safely

Reported via mobile in the Pavement Overcrowding category anonymously at 14:11, Friday 13 January 2023

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS4124471.

I am writing to inform you, that an already, very dangerous crossing, has become even more perilous.

The timings on the pedestrian lights have clearly been changed, resulting in very short (5 seconds, followed by the 4 second countdown) to cross from the school side to the middle island.

When on the middle island, the next pedestrian light turns red, causing bunching on the island. As we know, in the last 2 years there have been as many accidents where cars have collided with the barriers, the last causing significant damage to the island.

The next crossing (from the island to Dexters) have also become shorter.

Due to the crossings being so short, larger groups are forming to cross the road, resulting in many families trying to cross the road unsafely due as many aren’t aware of the timing changes but many don’t want to be stranded on the island.

Many thanks and regards,

Dear Parents & Carers

We have had a report of vehicles disobeying the red signal at the toucan crossing on the western arm of the St. Margaret?s Roundabout - near the school entrance - narrowly avoiding pedestrians trying to cross the road.

TfL have been contacted and have advised all pedestrians where possible, to use the iron footbridge to cross the A316/Chertsey Road. They have commissioned a survey to determine how often this issue occurs at the crossing and when, so that an Enforcement Team can pinpoint the best times to attend site and monitor it.

TfL also reiterated that there are currently no immediate plans to remove the iron footbridge, and it will continue to be maintained and reviewed.

Updates

  • The timings are terrible on the crossing nearest the school. The lights turn green and by the time you are half way across they have turned to red. Extremely dangerous for the school children going to school at St Stephens. It’s an accident waiting to happen and needs to be looked at urgently before something happens.
