Unnecessary road closure

Reported via mobile in the Roadworks category anonymously at 20:30, Mon 20 November 2023

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS5234819.

Road is closed for unnecessarily longer than the area required for the works. The lane also closes directly after a junction with a yellow box making it dangerous and impossible to anticipate. It is causing a lot of traffic and needs to go asap. Fix your rusting concrete bridge without the need to close the lane below

  • Thank you for taking the time to report this to us. It is much appreciated. National Highways phase-2 concrete pier repairs have been in situ since July 2023, to facilitate the essential repairs lane-3 is closed East & Westbound between Boston Manor Road & Clayponds Avenue & there us a closure of the crossover at Windmill Road.

Understandably any loss of lane capacity at any location has a detrimental impact to traffic & causes delay, this being a strategic route in and out of West London I can appreciate how long term it will cause a negative response from road users. That said we influenced a short reduction in Traffic Management to assist queuing traffic Eastbound by opening up some of Lane 3 & changing road markings and adding additional signs on approach to the Ealing Road junction a couple of weeks ago.

Sadly these lane closures facilitate scaffolding required to repair the structure above so removing even more Traffic Management would mean exposing the site & will cause safety problems, we could ask National Highways to not repair defects but this would result in the total loss of the M4, initiate it’s closure as an un-safe super structure and may also result in the full closure of the A4 Great West Road & all crossing points as it would be dangerous to pass under a dilapidated concrete structure with chunks of concrete falling down & the piers holding up the carriageway liable to fail and knock on affect would bring Hounslow to its knees for years if not decades.

If the issue persists, please raise another report or contact our customer services team on 0343 222 1234.
