Timings wrong causing delays to traffic

Reported via desktop in the General Fault category anonymously at 08:56, Wed 3 July 2024

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS6184993.

For the past couple of weeks the stretch of road leading up to these lights has had large delays in the morning. The traffic before Hatton Cross runs properly and the traffic after these lights is all clear. The timings of the lights must have changed to cause these big delays every morning between Hatton Cross and the junction of the A30 and The A312 The Parkway

  • Thank you for contacting us regarding the traffic signals at the junction of the A30 Great South West Road / A312 The Parkway. The traffic signals at this location operate on an automated traffic control system called SCOOT. The system utilises detectors installed in the ground to monitor the flow of vehicles on each approach to the junction. This information is then used to amend the green signal time provided to each approach throughout the day, based upon real-time fluctuations in traffic flow. In this way, more green signal time is given to an approach when high traffic flow is detected and, similarly, less green signal time provided when traffic flows are lower. No changes have been made at this junction to the control method or priorities in the last few months. As a result of your enquiry, our engineers have reviewed and monitored the operation of the junction. Following checks for faults and general operation, the junction was found to be working correctly. Historical traffic signal data shows no significant change in signal timings, nor in the level of congestion experienced by drivers when travelling through the junction over the last few weeks. We monitored the operation of this junction during the AM, interpeak and PM peak and believe that the current signal timings provide the best possible balance for all approaches. We thank you once again for bringing this matter to our attention and apologise for the inconvenience that you have experienced. We will continue to monitor this location.
