TfL: Is the stop closed or not?
Reported via Android in the Damage - other (bus stops and shelters) category anonymously at 12:16, Sunday 15 September 2024
Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS6473301.
A driver on the 314 heading south did not stop here despite multiple people pressing the button including a visibly frail elderly man with poor balance who was sat very close to the driver. He had a stick and stood up in plenty of time so it would have been difficult for the driver not to notice him in his peripheral vision. The driver did let us off at the next stop but the old man was understandably unhappy as he had to walk back and then beyond the stop. The driver's response was that he was "not allowed to stop there... it's not safe".
There had not been any warning announcements from the automated system or by the driver. 5 people got off who had all wanted the previous stop including me. As I needed to walk back past the stop I noticed there was no sign on the stop either (see photo).
Is this stop actually closed or did the driver just ignore the bell? Is there a fault with the automatic closed stop warning? Should the driver have given us a verbal announcement (through the plexiglass!) Why isn't there a sign on the stop? What would happen to a passenger who was waiting at the stop to alight, would the bus drive past them?
The time stamp on the photos is 14:01 on Friday 13 September 2024 which hopefully means you can identify which particular vehicle we were in.
That frail old man was also left standing as the bus went around corners for no apparent reason. It very concerning that people with mobility and balance problems think that they have to stand up well before the bus stops, just to ensure the driver stops and gives them enough time to get off, even when there is a corner coming up. It wasn't even busy so it's not as if the driver might have not seen him. My 84 year old mother insists on it too and I've seen plenty of other examples that worry the h*ll out of me.
