Some clever traffic management person changed settings

Reported via desktop in the General Fault category anonymously at 09:05, Thursday 19 September 2024

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS6488813.

Hi,

When on Kingston lane and traffic turning from Uxbridge road to Kingston lane. The signal on Kingston lane used to go green for left. Now it doesn't and causes huge tail back and adds 15 minutes to my time journey, costing me more money in petrol and polluting the environment.

This has been working for over 20 years and some clever traffic management person has changed it. Please could you fix.

  • I agree with the person who reported the problem with the junction of the Uxbridge Rd and Kingston Lane - the changes are causing really long tail backs both on the Uxbridge Rd going towards Uxbridge and coming from Kingston lane to either turn right or left. I saw people working on these lights a couple of weeks ago and they have not been right since. Please deal with this urgently

Posted anonymously at 17:47, Tuesday 24 September 2024

  • These need fixing URGENTLY as it causes unnecessary tailbacks, so at rush hour it is chaos. People are also starting to jump the lights.

Posted anonymously at 19:39, Thursday 26 September 2024

  • This is really URGENT- the traffic light issue is having a knock on effect in the whole area as people are trying to find ways to avoid them. I sat at them yesterday and there was a period of at least 2 minutes where we were being held at the red light - the lane coming from Uxbridge turning right onto Kingston lane had the green filter light BUT NO ONE WAS IN IT. This is really frustrating as a normal 15 minute commute to work is now taking 35 minutes plus - most of which is sitting at the lights on Hillingdon hill towards Uxbridge waiting to turn left onto Kingston lane.

  • I have just spent 32 minutes on the phone to tfl to urge this issue. The advisor spoke to someone in the traffic management team who advised there is no issue- I have asked for the matter to be escalated and advised there definitely is an issue. I will update this thread when I have an update

Posted anonymously at 14:18, Friday 27 September 2024

  • I would further like to report the issue of the left turn filter. I am a nearby resident and it is very frustrating getting to and from my house as i am stuck in 10 to 20 minute queues every time.

  • Urgent action really needs to be taken - at the very least can you explain why the traffic light sequence has been changed? At 8.30 this morning the traffic was backed up to just after the junction of harlington road going towards Uxbridge- it took me 5 light changes to get to the junction of Kingston lane.

Posted anonymously at 20:25, Monday 30 September 2024

  • The traffic light sequencing is now an absolute joke. some mornings the traffic goes 3/4 of the way up Kingston lane mixing the university and other traffic.

Posted anonymously at 12:16, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • I am not a driver as I use public transport, but this is causing significant issues for my team members, as some have no alternative but to drive to and from work. The delays caused by this 'non-urgent' fault result in staff not making school or nursery collections in a timely manner, in addition to the extra pollution and the safety risks - as I see that people are starting to jump the lights. If this is not urgent, what would be classified as an urgent fault please?

Posted anonymously at 12:17, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • Action is required the traffic light sequencing is causing an extra 20 minutes on my journey to work each way. Queuing from st answer church this morning the kingston road turning light sequence is what is causing the tailback and extra unnecessary traffic. PLEASE CAN THIS BE LOOKED AT!

Posted anonymously at 12:22, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • This is causing significant issues for me and my team members, in fact all staff coming off campus fro Brunel University. If this is not urgent, what would be classified as an urgent fault please?

  • This is causing huge delays to my commute, which is already long. To add another 20 minutes just to get out of the University area and towards the motorway is unnecessary, all because of poor light sequencing choices

Posted by Maddie Adams-Smith at 12:31, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • This is a significant issue now with people making dangerous 3 point turns now to avoid the traffic once they realise the holdup. This is a safety concern now as parts of this road are blind to the bend on on coming traffic where people are attempting this. There have also been people dangerously attempting to run the red light because there is no clear reason for the red light to be in effect when there is no traffic traveling along the road due to other filters. This needs to be address urgently due to the safety implications

Posted anonymously at 12:32, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • Hi we live locally and often use this turning.... Please can the left turn filter light be replaced. It's creating lots of extra stalled traffic and more poluttion by vehicles. Thank you for your consideration.

Posted by Natalie Crowley at 12:56, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • The green light not allowing cars to turn left onto Hillingdon Road from Kingston Lane is causing huge disruptions not only for those leaving Brunel University but also for first responders who are unable to filter through. There is no logical reason not to allow cars to make the left turn when it's completely free of traffic - this needs to be resolved urgently.

  • Afternoon,

I wish to further support the valid views already voiced, as well as expressing my own view.

As someone who works at Brunel University London and has done for the last 20+ years, the sudden change to the traffic light system exiting Kingston Lane onto the Uxbridge road makes no sense at all. The original set up with motorists being able to turn left on the filter worked perfectly fine and has done for countless years.

The change has drastically increased the volume of traffic to the point where I feel that its borderline dangerous, as at peak times, Kingston lane is at a standstill and if emergency services needed to pass, this would be very difficult as they would need to pass on the other side of the road which would also have traffic.

As many already know, Kingston Lane is a main route for buses, with many needing to exit left onto the Uxbridge road and the removal of the 'left filter arrow' is resulting in more chaos.

Aside from the increased level of traffic which is the primary concern as it adds unnecessary delays to all motorists for absolutely no benefit in my opinion, we're seeing motorists behaving in such away where they are trying to bypass the traffic jam by either passing others on the other side of the road to get slightly ahead or making illegal u-turns to then go a different way.

The change to the traffic light system does not only affect exiting onto the Uxbridge road, it directly impacts Pield Heath Road and all adjoining roads, and to circle back to my emergency services comment, Hillingdon Hospital resides there.

I am sure that others will agree, the traffic light system urgently needs to be restored to what it was prior with the left lane filter being re-added, allowing traffic to move in the way it did.

Posted anonymously at 13:45, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • Please can the left hand lane filter onto Hillingdon Hill with these traffic lights be restored? The current situation is causing congestion problems throughout the surrounding roads. Surely the fact that Kingston Lane is used frequently by emergency vehicles for Hillingdon Hospital must merit it as an issue which needs to be addressed urgently.

  • Afternoon, the sequencing of these lights being changed is causing huge delays to my commute as it takes 20 minutes to leave only the University area. Please could this be reviewed?

Posted anonymously at 15:45, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • Current view trying to exit University campus - this has been like this since around 3.00 this afternoon and it's only going to get worse as more people head home.

  • I work at Brunel and it's taken my 30mins to get off campus this evening. I noticed them changing the lights roughly 2/3 weeks ago and now that term has started for the students it has caused more traffic. This desperately needs to be reverted to the old system as majority of the cars/buses all turn left. We need to understand who thought that this would be a good idea and why there were no consultations. This urgently needs to be reviewed ASAP.

Posted anonymously at 18:17, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • Adding to the post where the individual shared an image of Brunel University campus and the traffic tailbacks, the traffic has just now cleared 3 hours and 20 minutes later. An urgent review and resolution are needed

Posted anonymously at 18:23, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • I work at Brunel University and usually I can get from campus to home within 30 minutes. Today it took me 30 minutes just to leave campus due to the traffic situation. Whose idea was it to update the traffic light settings? Why was there no review on what the consequences of changing these settings would be? Why was no one consulted beforehan? This is a major inconvenience and needs to be changed back ASAP!

Posted anonymously at 19:19, Tuesday 1 October 2024

  • Those traffic lights are dangerous now. The number of cars who drive through red lights to try and beat the traffic will end up causing a tragic accident.

Emergency vehicles struggle to use the road now too.

This is awful for the traffic around Hillingdon Hill

Posted anonymously at 08:59, Wednesday 2 October 2024

  • It is understood that TLF think that there is no issue with the traffic and their priority is Uxbridge Road, however common sense prevailing that the knock on effect will be Kingston Lane, traffic coming from Brunel and further down from Hillingdon Hospital. It is taking 45 minutes to leave work in the evening, notwithstanding the journey home. I am not sure why someone thought this was a good idea but clearly it isn't!! Can this be fixed as a matter of urgency before there is an incident / accident

Posted anonymously at 09:09, Wednesday 2 October 2024

  • Fixing these traffic lights at the end of Kingston Lane is a priority. It is backed up all day every day since the 'fault' started not only does if have a knock on effect for everyone getting to work, it blocks the University campus and MORE importantly ambulances are finding it difficult to get through. I work at Brunel and can see the roundabout from my office. Four emergency vehicles were stuck at the roundabout at different times just yesterday.

Posted anonymously at 09:26, Wednesday 2 October 2024

  • There is no reason why cars turning left into Hillingdon Road from Kingston Lane should not also have the green filter while traffic turning right from Hillingdon Road into Kingston Lane have their green filter. This is how it used to be and there is no apparent reason why this has been stopped. Instead, traffic is piling up in Kingston Lane and motorcyclists overtaking the cars are putting themselves and others into danger around the blind bend. Please revert back to how it was asap.

Posted anonymously at 09:49, Wednesday 2 October 2024

  • I support the valid views already voiced, The sudden change to the traffic light system exiting Kingston Lane onto the Uxbridge road makes no sense at all. The previous one with motorists being able to turn left worked perfectly well.

This change has drastically increased the volume of traffic. Kingston lane is at a standstill and really difficult if emergency services needed to get through. Also, Kingston Lane is a main route for buses many turning left onto the Uxbridge road and the change in the signal is resulting in more chaos.

This change has absolutely no benefit to anyone. Please can it be reverted back as soon as possible before any serious incident happens.

Posted anonymously at 09:55, Wednesday 2 October 2024

  • The impact of the light sequence change is now massive, as well as dangerous, and with no traffic cameras in this area (other than red light cameras) there is now way that TFL can say they have looked at footage and there is no problem. Come and survey at 8.30am and 5pm in the full length of Kingston Lane/adjoining streets and that will show you the scale of the problem. And on a hospital access route!

Posted anonymously at 10:22, Wednesday 2 October 2024

  • I have just spent another 25 minutes on the phone to TFL regarding this, I have emphasised it is now a safety concern as it is virtually impossible to leave Brunel campus in the afternoon. I have been advised my case ref 20555991 has now been changed to high priority, I have asked for someone from TFL to contact me but am still waiting. I can only ask that as many people complain about this issue as possible.

Posted by Christine Considine at 10:48, Wednesday 2 October 2024

  • Just want to reiterate all of the complaints above, this is now causing major delays and dangerous driving. It also happens to be one of the routes that often seem to be used by ambulances to get onto the main road and they would not stand a chance of getting through the traffic at peak times.

Posted anonymously at 11:17, Wednesday 2 October 2024

  • The removal of the left filter light, from Kingston Lane to Hillingdon Hill is now causing massive tailbacks, and hindering emergency vehicles coming and going from Hillingdon Hospital. I can not see any reason why this would have made sense, and it should be restored to its normal operation ASAP, as it has worked for many many years without issue.

Posted anonymously at 14:02, Wednesday 2 October 2024

  • I cannot agree with all these comments more! A two minute journey to the hospital now takes 30 minutes so missed appointments to those of us that were not aware ril too late! The lights have had this filter forever and it has worked really well! This needs rectifying urgently ! There will be a nasty accident otherwise or worse caused by u turns etc

Posted by Deb bull at 09:39, Thursday 3 October 2024

  • Why has this not been fixed yet?!! Absolutely ridiculous. This traffic light error is causing a lot of pollution and frustration. It is a residential road and this is unnecessary. Sadiq Khan where are you????

Posted anonymously at 15:05, Thursday 3 October 2024

  • I work at the Ambulance station. PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP. Time is crucial to some of our patients in vehicles getting stuck in this unnecessary traffic!

Posted anonymously at 16:21, Thursday 3 October 2024

This has now been investigated and we can confirm that there is a non-urgent fault at these traffic lights. We have therefore referred it to our contractors, and you should see an improvement within 28 days.' This should be classed as an URGENT fault - as you can see from the photo ambulances are struggling to get through - you are playing with people's lives

Posted anonymously at 16:27, Thursday 3 October 2024

  • 28 days? This is crazy! Where is everyone ?TFL please take this seriously

Posted anonymously at 17:34, Thursday 3 October 2024

  • If by any chance at all someone from TFL is reading this thread - it is absolutely appalling no one from TFL has provided at least an update on this. Twice I have called and asked to be called back - zero response. The situation is very serious and it just appears we are all being ignored. This was reported on 19th September.
