Illegal left turns
Reported via desktop in the Safety concern (traffic or pedestrian) category anonymously at 09:36, Friday 16 May 2025
Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS7577645.
Despite current signage, cars constantly make illegal left turns from Bounds Green Road on to Brownlow Road. This is a huge safety concern because they turn into the pedestrian crossing on the green man and pedestrians are not expecting vehicles and often don't look out for them. Thousands of illegal left turns will occur each month - at a meeting with local councillors this week, there were three illegal left turns counted in the space of 5 minutes. As a further measure beyond current signage to remind drivers there is no left turn, could the green lights be changed from green circles to a green forward arrow on the left hand side for the lane allowed to go straight on and a green right arrow on the right hand side for the lane allowed to turn right?
The photos attached show a) the junction in question and b) an example of the green forward arrow style of light being requested.
This junction is very close to Bounds Green School and is on the walking route to school for many other children, so it is used every day by hundreds of children. There have been many near misses due to illegal left turns as when drivers have the opportunity to do this turn, they drive across a pedestrian crossing which is showing the green man for pedestrians who often don't look out for cars making this turn, as you would not expect this to happen. The visually impaired have found this crossing to be entirely unusable due to the danger posed by cars going through the pedestrian crossing when there is a green man, meaning they cannot cross safely. It has been an issue for many years, ever since the no left turn was introduced, around 2010 or 2011.
