Traffic chaos and air pollution generated by the Merton Council roadworks

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks category anonymously at 10:11, Monday 19 May 2025

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS7588206.

The huge traffic congestion caused by the ongoing roadworks generated by Merton Council at the junction of Merantun Way and Morden Road are impacting everyone in the local area. 1. The traffic jams go as far back as the Polka theatre and affect buses and cars, making bus and car journeys impossible with the result that people are late for work and/or miss their medical appointments. Sometimes bus companies have to terminate bus journeys and ask passengers to get off which causes terrible stress. 2. The idling vehicles cause illegal levels of air pollution which affects the health of local residents and pedestrians and cyclists. I plan to but a portable air quality monitor to evidence this because it has become absolutely untenable. This makes a mockery of the London Mayor’s pledge to clean up the air. 3. According the Merton Council website on roadworks, companies who are responsible ( in this case Merton Council itself) must always explain what is happening via signage, always have activity going on and if not explain why, and they must keep London moving by working outside peak hours and work all day or extended hours to complete works as quickly as possible. None of this is happening. Not only have the works been going on for weeks but every time I drive past, there is NOBODY working there and the barriers blocking the closed lanes are up! Clearly Merton Council who are responsible for this chaos must be held accountable and must require the workers to finish the works as soon as possible by allocating workers to work extended hours including weekends or nights. The misery and pollution caused by these roadworks are unacceptable and the slow pace of the works totally preventable as the council itself is responsible. I am asking Merton Council to finish the works as fast as possible and to stop the traffic chaos and air pollution it generates.
