Traffic light sequence causing unsafe situations on London Road Roundabout

Reported via desktop in the Safety concern (traffic or pedestrian) category anonymously at 22:49, Tuesday 16 September 2025

Sent to TfL less than a minute later. TfL ref: FMS8175266.

Last year, TFL spent 9 months adding traffic lights to the London Road Roundabout, basically turning it into something that is not strictly a roundabout any more, but a holding zone for anyone that dares to turn right from either side of the A310, meanwhile traffic approaching it from either side of the A316 can freely flow over it.

TFL says the redesign was done in the name of safety, but in the real world, the roundabout is too small and oddly shaped for this, so it has created a frustrating and arguably unsafe situation where vehicles turning right from either end of the A310 block A316 traffic when their lights are green. What we now have is an unreasonable amount of traffic waiting at all exits, frustrated A316 drivers beeping their horns at people coming from the A310 because too many tried to enter the roundabout at the same time, and it just takes forever to cross what should be a very simple junction.

3 possible solutions:

- Do not hold any traffic on the roundabout, put sensors on the second set of lights so any detected A310 traffic has time to clear the roundabout before the A316 lights turn green - Remove the traffic lights entirely (except the pedestrian crossings) and just let it function like a normal roundabout - Put a box junction on both the A310 exits, this is the least ideal solution but would at least help the A316 flow properly
